History on the Hill
Join Nathalie Brandes on a journey to the distant past and the ancient roots of the mining industry. The story begins with the earliest mines in the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) that provided people with chert and mineral pigments. This presentation progresses into the Copper Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age discussing important technological advances such as firesetting, smelting, and casting. Major advances by the Romans, including new mine dewatering methods, mine ventilation, and hydraulic mining will be hgighlighted. These ancient techniques became the foundations of the modern mining industry.
